Flowers are one of my favorite things to photograph. They are easy to photograph and have a lot of diversity that make every picture unique. Here are some of the tips and tricks I have learned and apply my floral photography.

  1. Determine your style. It can be light and ethereal, dark with stark contrast or somewhere in the middle to show the true colors of these natural beauties.

  2. Decide on levels of editing to do on the photos.

  3. Seek contrast.

  4. Try different settings to adjust light and depth of field through aperture and f stops. Flowers can generally hold place for a long time so it gives the photographer the opportunity to challenge camera settings.

  5. Adjust distance, position and arrangement. Again flowers are sedentary and can withstand several rounds of photos until they start to whilt. This is a little more difficult with planted flowers as they cannot move and you as the photographer do not want to disturb any other flowers or plants that may be around it.

  6. Look beyond the flower itself. The head of the flower is certainly the most appealing part that boasts to be photographed, but are there other parts? Are there leaves? Are there thorns? Could you get close enough to see the pollen in the center? If you pulled back, could you include the background? A person or just a part of them?

Like people and anything else you may photography, there is beauty and goodness in the stories they tell.
